Background information

The relatively small country relies heavily on exports of oil since it hosts about one-tenth of the world’s oil reserves. In terms of gross domestic product, Kuwait performs well and ranks 10th globally in per capita terms.

Due to its harsh climatic conditions combined with its vulnerable water and soil resources, the agriculture sector in Kuwait is almost non-existent. Food is therefore mainly imported, especially from China.

The population number of currently around 2.8 million people depends drastically on the situation from conflicting neighboring countries. According to the HDI (2014), an overall positive trend can be observed for Kuwait. Its value is 0.816, which put the country in the category of very high human development. The high score is mainly achieved due to a high GDP and an improvement in mean years of schooling. Accordingly, the GHI (2015) for Kuwait improved significantly as well to a score of 5.0, since the share of undernourished people decreased drastically since the early 1990’s to currently 3.1%.
